Detox Offers Many Benefits

Feeling out of sorts in all parts of your life—physically, mentally, emotionally—even spiritually? You may wish to consider the detoxification options offered by Dr. Darlene Holloway and her associates at the Alternative Health Center of Cary.

“We are all on a different path, functioning at different levels,” notes Dr. Holloway, “and so our first task with a new client is assessment. Is the presenting client taking a variety of medications? Are they suffering with such issues as bladder infections or kidney infections? Is a mix of medications more harmful than helpful?

“We’re all becoming aware of the fact that we live in a highly toxic world, and thus colon hydrotherapy and other detoxification procedures are gaining attention as critical restorative therapies,” she notes.

“In this practice, when we’re detoxing the body we consider a number of elimination paths, including the colon, the gallbladder, the liver, lungs, kidneys, skin, and bladder. The colon is always of critical importance. It needs to be functioning properly or all other detox procedures will be much less effective. And reabsorption of toxic substances that fail to clear the colon are more difficult and challenging than initial detox procedures.”

International Honors

When Dr. Holloway describes the therapies to enhance colon health and overall health, she has an international audience. In 2009, she became the first in her specialty to be recognized as the Colon Hydrotherapist of the Year by the International Association for Colon Hydrotherapy, acknowledging that she is, indeed, a master of the art and science of detoxification of the human body. She has repeatedly been recognized for continued exemplary service on the Association’s Board of Directors.

Skin Functions

“Using the skin as an instrument of detoxification is critically important,” notes Dr. Holloway. “It is the body’s largest and heaviest organ, with multiple functions: protection, heat regulation, excretion, secretion, absorption, and sensation. It is also a key part of the body’s toxic elimination system, and it needs to be unblocked.”

Many internal and external factors can affect the health of our skin, she notes, “including poor nutrition, medications, medical conditions, stress, free radicals, lack of sleep, and lack of exercise. Environmental exposure, air quality, pollutants, humidity as well as misuse of skin care products or poor maintenance also contribute to unhealthy looking skin.

“It’s quite common, for example, for a client to come to us seeking relief from constipation. Their mindset is on that issue, whereas my mindset is on looking at the body as a whole, seeking to bring it into balance so the body does the work. And that means eliminating toxins from every organ and every system in the body.

“We want to work with people to detox the body in a way that is supportive of their whole-body healing. It’s ideal when a client comes to us who first does an Ion cleanse, drawing toxins out of all the organs in the body, and follows this with lymphatic massage, colon hydrotherapy, and use of the Chi machine. And there are other therapy-detox options, depending on the needs of the client we are working with.

“Let me add that I am not a fan of OTC—over the counter—colon cleansers, because they are full of laxatives. The colon is simply four layers of muscle, and they function as all muscles do, with contraction and relaxation. And with over-use, like all muscles, they become lazy. Laxatives can be and often are an over-stimulation, a real burden on the colon.”
