Regeneration: The Path to Health and Beauty

“I care a great deal about finding ways to reverse the disease process itself, and not simply manage it.” And knowledgeable observers would agree that Dr. Bhavna Tank, who expressed that comment, has achieved remarkable success in pursuing that goal.

Dr. Vaidya-Tank giving a patient an Ultherapy treatment.

More than a decade ago, she established the Family Wellness Clinic in Clayton, which rapidly earned federal designation as a Patient-Centered Medical Home—“a model for primary care that is patient-centered, comprehensive, team-based, coordinated, accessible, and focused on quality and safety.”

Even broader, more innovative healing paths exist in her latest enterprise, establishing and overseeing all healing aspects of the Family Wellness Clinic • Regenesis MD, on Creedmoor Road in Raleigh, even as the Family Wellness Clinic in Clayton continues with its mission work.

“At times,” notes Dr. Vaidya-Tank, “we’re asked to explain the term Regenesis for this relatively new health enterprise. And a principal reason we selected that name is because we do a lot of genetic testing. I do believe that genetic testing is the wave of the future in health care. And we are certainly on that path. We do genetic testing with weight issues, with skin conditions, with cardiovascular disease—with a great range of physical issues. It is a big part of what we do.”

And, she continues, “the name also suggests ‘rebirth’ and rejuvenation, because we also want to regenerate. Our name, in short, reflects the blending of our practice’s commitment to genetics as well as regeneration and anti-aging medicine.”

Dr. Vaidya-Tank also pointed to the symbolism of the lotus flower in the Regenesis MD logo. “The lotus,” she says, “reflects the way we present ourselves to prospective patients and clients, because it symbolizes an important fact: The lotus flower is beautiful and it grows in dirt—it needs dirt to grow. We think about rejuvenation in those terms. We often remind our clients—and ourselves—that even if we have a really bad physical or emotional environment and really bad genetics, we can still regenerate, we can still be beautiful, we can still have great health. That was the whole idea of establishing Regenesis as a vital part of this practice.

“And in addition,” she says, “on a more personal note, in Sanskrit my mother’s name is Saroj, which translates in English to lotus. We are natives of Bahrain. My grandmother’s name was Padmini, which is also lotus. Before I opened this practice, I was in India and I saw a truly beautiful lake, and there was a huge bed of pink lotuses. I looked at this and realized that underneath the beauty there was just mud; but the lake was pink and beautiful with all the lotuses in bloom. And I was reminded that truly beautiful things can come from dirt and mud.”

Regenesis in Practice

“The symbolism in the name Regenesis is more than just an ideal,” says Dr. Vaidya-Tank. “Our practice is built on the firm belief that health is holistic—that achieving and maintaining health requires aesthetic considerations as well as medical ones. Typically, when a patient has a health issue they often will seek specialized care. When they come to us at Regenesis, we will work with them to carefully and completely assess all aspects of who they are and guide them on the path to achieve deeper and broader levels of health. This includes their aesthetics, their weight, their sexual function, the quality and appearance of their skin—all the aspects that make each of us unique and special. This comprehensive approach is, quite honestly, what makes us unique. I have yet to see another practice that replicates the full range of what we do for our clients. I’m very proud of that.”

Range and Depth

At the same time, Dr. Vaidya-Tank emphasizes that the patients who come to her practice have many choices. “We have many patients who have other primary care physicians or other providers—and often they come to us to help them put all the pieces of their health planning together.

“They may have had their physical exams or their blood work done, or they’ve seen someone for their heart or hormone issues—and they come to us asking for help in understanding where they are and to consider next best steps. They often ask: ‘Will you please just look at all these test results and tell me what they mean, and what I should do next.’ And we’re very willing and capable of doing a detailed overall assessment of where they are and where they next need to go to promote their own well-being.

“We have a great range of appropriate options, and our expertise is understanding and proceeding with the best possible treatment options at any point in time.

“But the important thing we offer,” she emphasizes, “is our holistic perspective. We look at all aspects of health—not simply a specific aesthetic treatment. We might say, for example, ‘This procedure can re-contour your body—addressing a weight issue. At the same time, we can also look at your genetics profile and figure out the best diet for you to achieve and maintain a healthy weight, and suggest a good weight-loss or detoxifying diet. And we can augment that treatment by providing IV fluids with lots of vitamins to help detoxify your liver in a healing process that is better and faster.’

“Our patients often comment that we are treating them from the inside out,” notes Dr. Vaidya-Tank, “and we agree. We consider all options when assessing how we can best be helpful to a patient. In terms of weight management, we are, quite honestly, head and shoulders above anything else offered in the marketplace, and that is generally true, as well, in the broad area of aesthetics—we simply have the top of the line in lasers and other treatments.”

And, she continues, “I want to highlight a very important feature of our aesthetics program. All of our lasers are safe for all skin types; in fact we specialize in aesthetic treatments for skin of color. This was something of particular concern to me in creating this practice; I am of Indian origin and I have the type of skin that easily hyper-pigments—easily damaged. In fact, we have a lot of ethnicities represented on our staff—with a wide range of skin types—one is Korean; another is from Honduras. So we understand skin of color—and as a general rule, it is very challenging to get effective treatment that embraces this wide range of skin color.”

Dr. Vaidya-Tank and Director of Aesthetics Kimberly Tan confer about a patient case.

And, she notes, “I should add that we make a sincere effort to keep our prices at a reasonable level—because we believe that aesthetic considerations are an integral part of whole health and we want our services to be available to most people. We truly do this work because we love it—and we share the joy with our patients about changes that make a profound difference in their lives.”

Regenesis MD: A Menu of
Medical Aesthetics Services

Regenesis MD offers a rich menu of aesthetic services—facials, body contouring, a broad array of skin treatments, and much more. But it should not be confused with a spa, says the practice’s Director of Aesthetics, Kimberly Tan. “Regenesis MD is a medical aesthetics practice,” she explains. “That means that it is more than superficial beauty treatments. We’re all about treating from inside out—addressing the internal health issues even as we improve external appearances.”

And, she continues, “medical aesthetics involves rejuvenating treatments and modalities—using pharmaceutical-grade products and lasers—that can only be used under a physician’s care. Skin resurfacing is a good example—because this involves going deep into the different layers of the skin. It’s a process that causes trauma to the skin, so there’s a lot of pharmaceutical-grade skin care involved.”

Health, Beauty, Function

The experts at Regenesis MD have high goals and realistic expectations for each and every patient/client, notes Dr. Vaidya-Tank, owner and director of the multi-dimensional practice. “Simply stated, we work with each client to attain the highest levels of health, function, and beauty. And we have an array of proven services and programs to guide that unfolding process.

“Unquestionably, one of the highest priorities for many people is dealing with both the health and aesthetic problems of excess weight. For some, the most pressing issue is to shed (and keep off!) unhealthy pounds. For others—perhaps who have lost weight but not inches—reshaping the body is an important goal. Regenesis MD offers a number of programs to help patients lose weight safely, to guide them in maintaining healthy weight, and to address aesthetic issues as well.”

"Mary" lost a pound a day on the HCG diet.

The HCG Diet

One such program is the practice’s HCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin) diet.  A client we’ll call Mary began the HCG diet weighing 232 pounds, and 23 days later there was a smile on her face as the scale read 210—the loss of a pound a day while on the diet. (see photos)

“HCG is a natural hormone that is known to break down abnormal body fat,” notes Dr. Vaidya-Tank. “The good news is that the weight you lose on this diet comes from targeting your fat cells, not your muscles. Losing fat has many health benefits, including lowering cholesterol and reducing the risk of heart disease. As you lose the fat, all of those stored nutrients are released into your bloodstream and are absorbed—resulting in more energy and an overall sense of well-being.”

Notes Mary: “HCG uses a very low-calorie diet. Other low calorie diets typically cause feelings of hunger, lethargy, and weakness. But with the HCG diet, I learned, the fat that is being mobilized in your body is used as energy, which makes up the difference in calories. Bottom line: on the HCG diet, I did not feel hungry.

“The foods I ate were healthy, nutrient-rich foods with lots of fiber. And I was pleased to discover that there were many foods that are not only ultra-low-calorie, but also taste great. The thing I needed to pay attention to was portion size, because I was only eating 500 calories each day.”

Is HCG right for you? Notes Dr. Vaidya-Tank: “Weight loss can vary but one thing is for sure—you will lose weight quickly with the HCG Diet as long as you follow it correctly. You can lose anywhere from a half a pound to up to a pound a day.”

To address different fat-reduction issues, Regenesis MD offers body-contouring programs. One such program, UltraShape, Dr. Vaidya-Tank says, “is a non-invasive body-shaping procedure that uses focused, pulsed ultrasound for selective fat-cell destruction. It is the first and only FDA-cleared treatment of its kind. Our clients consistently describe UltraShape as a pleasant, relaxing experience.

UltraShape uses focused, pulsed ultrasound for selective fat-cell destruction.

“Client and practitioner first determine the exact treatment area,” she explains, “and then a specially designed belt is wrapped around the client’s abdomen and a soothing gel is applied to the skin. Our trained technician glides the UltraShape transducer over the treatment area, gently delivering virtually painless ultrasound pulses.

“UltraShape is not like anything else in the marketplace,” notes Dr. Vaidya-Tank. “Unlike liposuction, it is non-surgical—which means there are no incisions, anesthetics, or recovery time. Smooth, contoured results are often seen as quickly as two weeks after the first treatment.”

Martha Johnson completed four UltraShape sessions over a two-month period. “I lost about 10 pounds overall with this program, but weight-loss was not a primary goal. The goal was to reshape the abdomen area, and that was accomplished very successfully (see photos). I’m now considering moving on to reshape the sides of my abdomen area.”

For Many, a Dream Come True

“The new FDA-approved Ultherapy®,” says Dr. Vaidya-Tank, “may in fact be a dream come true for those who want to achieve a fresher, more youthful look. It harnesses the power of ultrasound to lift skin on the neck, under the chin, and on the eyebrow in a process established as safe and effective in clinical studies and in over half a million treatments worldwide.” (see photos)

The procedure, she explains, “stimulates collagen production by delivering focused ultrasound energy to the skin’s foundational layer typically addressed in cosmetic surgery—but without cutting or disrupting the surface of the skin.

Before and after an Ultherapy treatment.

“Unlike lasers, radio frequency, surgery, and other technologies, non-surgical Ultherapy bypasses the surface of the skin to deliver the right amount of ultrasound energy at the right depths and the right temperature. This energy triggers a natural response under the skin, jump-starting the regenerative process that produces fresh, new collagen.”

Rapid Results

Some patients, Dr. Vaidya-Tank reports, see an initial effect right after their treatment—and the real results appear over two to three months as new collagen works to lift and tighten skin on the neck, chin, brow or chest.
“While Ultherapy won’t duplicate the results of a face lift, it’s a clinically proven non-invasive alternative for those not ready for surgery—and can even be an option for patients who wish to extend the effects of cosmetic surgery.”
