Health&Healing in the Triangle is a business whose mission is to share information about health care and health-related services in the North Carolina Triangle area and about the practitioners who provide them.

It began, over 30 years ago, with the publishing of a newspaper called Getting Well. That publication evolved, becoming the bimonthly publication Health&Healing, established over the past two decades as the area’s leading consumer publication about health and wellness issues.

With the development of the Internet, Health&Healing in the Triangle became a web resource—publishing its newspaper on-line and, more recently, developing a classified Health Services Directory, providing contact information for hundreds of health care providers in the Triangle. In different ways, these two resources—the Directory and the publication—support Health&Healing in the Triangle’s mission to let readers know about the health care options available to them locally.

The Publication

Like many magazines and newspapers, Health&Healing has been a hybrid for some time—distributed as a free-distribution printed publication and published on-line as well. The trend is clear, however, that the world prefers to communicate on-line. So, beginning with the August 2025 edition, Health&Healing will be published on-line exclusively, and be “distributed” through the growing Internet network.

The publication will continue to feature information about health resources in the Triangle through articles by and about local practitioners. Articles provide valuable information that a simple ad or Directory listing cannot. Through articles, readers are introduced to the practitioners themselves—their philosophies, training, and experience. They learn, as well, details about the specific and varied services offered by a provider, about advances in various disciplines, and about the experiences of the patients they serve.

Each issue of Health&Healing features a specific health care topic, which serves as a focal point for articles. A sampling of past topics includes maintaining health in a toxic world, children’s health, rejuvenation, and surgery. Among recent topics: the art & science of healing, diagnosing illness, and optimal health, Readers of Health&Healing include both health care consumers and providers—a mix that has proven extremely effective in introducing readers to a broad range of health and healing options

The Classified Health Services Directory

The classified Health Services Directory provides a different kind of resource. The variety of health care providers and services in our area is extraordinary. Most of us are familiar with specialists such as dermatologists, dietitians, urologists, surgeons, massage therapy, pediatricians, or chiropractors. Less familiar are practitioners who offer such services as craniosacral therapy, colon hydrotherapy, infusion therapy, TMS therapy, hormone replacement therapy, or Reiki.

This is just a sampling of the many healers and healing modalities available in the Triangle. The Directory includes many, many more. Listings are classified by practice speciality, as well as by the therapies offered and conditions treated.  The Health Services Directory began—many years ago—as a section of the printed publication; it has expanded on the website to include an ever-increasing list of health and healing options locally available. Each listing provides basic contact information and a link to the provider’s website for more information.

About Our Staff

Joshua Hartford and Sheilah Thomas created Health&Healing and served as its editors and publishers since its founding in 1991. Mr. Hartford retired from his editor’s role in 2020 and passed away in 2022; Ms. Thomas continues as editor and publisher.

In founding Health&Healing, Josh Hartford drew on his decades of experience as a journalist and public information director for colleges, universities, and hospitals in Connecticut and New York.

After obtaining her master’s degree in public relations from Boston University, Sheilah Thomas became editor of the monthly magazine of the American Association of School Administrators, and was recruited to Connecticut to serve as special assistant to the Education Commissioner. Since moving to North Carolina in 1981, she—with Joshua Hartford—provided editorial and marketing support for a variety of organizations, focusing primarily on education and health, before founding Health&Healing. Experiences included joining in the establishment and development of the educational research laboratory in Triangle Research Park, and serving as a long-time consultant to the Program on Integrative Medicine at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
